Wandering round the Wirral

Oh dear, not a good start to the day at our favourite hotel. One of the reasons why I like MacDonalds Hotels is the smoked haddock topped with a poached egg for breakfast - delicious! Except they don't have it, problems with the suppliers apparently. Worse to follow - Carole's porridge was stone cold... literally you could stick your finger in it. Which is what we told them to do with it (or words to that effect).
Hoylake beach on a clear sunny day
Anyway, the day got better afterwards as the sun was shining, so we decided to head for the Wirral to explore a part of the country we'd not been to before. First stop was Hoylake, probably best known for the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, which occasionally stages the Open championship. We found ourselves on the promenade, looking out over a vast sandy beach, stretching far into the distance. On the horizon were dozens of sand yachts, racing along the beach. We strolled for about a mile or so up the promenade before returning in the opposite direction back to the car.

The most surprising thing was just how few people there were in such a pleasant place.

From Hoylake we headed further round the coast to New Brighton, which certainly wasn't lacking in people, even in February. After a spot of lunch we walked a short way around the headland to see the views down to Liverpool, the famous skyline clearly visible in the distance. From there we made our way slowly back to the car, and then home, fresh and invigorated in the cold February air!
