Perfect Winter walk at Pennington Flash

Pennington Flash, just outside of Leigh, is a unintended by-product of Lancahire's industrial past. The flash is a lake, perhaps a mile or so long, which was created by coal extraction from the huge collieries in the area which literally made the ground sink and flood. The mines now are long gone and the area has been transformed over the years into a very popular visitor attraction, frequented by bird watchers, ramblers and families.

We took Carole's mum and dad for a stroll round the lake and we had a very pleasant afternoon in the sunshine. The circular walk is around 3 miles and takes an hour and a half or so (dependent on how many pictures you stop to take). As you'd expect for mid-February, the paths were muddy in places, but so long as you're wearing the right gear, it's not a problem (it's amazing how many people don't though).
