First go at studio photography

Thanks to Jeff Kay from the Camera Club, who's hosted a couple of sessions for club members at his photography studio where we've been able to have a go with the studio lighting as well as being models too!

Jeff had offered to run a couple of sessions as the camera club hadn't been meeting for a while due to the bank holidays. Last week we learned a little about different lighting styles, using a mannequin's head as a 'model', but this week we had a go ourselves, providing we were prepared to model for the camera too.

Somehow I seemed to find myself in front of the camera as much as behind it, and when Jeff's various props came out there was no escape from looking ridiculous (this one isn't the worst picture taken!).

Yours truly looking silly with a hat
I'd brought Louise from work along too as she enjoys portrait photography and has wanted to try studio photography for a while, and she too seemed to be in front of the camera far more than she'd expected. The others from the club were definitely much more shy than we were, but in all honesty it was just as much fun as taking the photos.

Somehow Louise manages to look cool even with Jeff's props
Lighting for studio work is a huge topic, so we've only just scratched the surface tonight - all these photos were taken using just one light and a softbox (to diffuse the light and soften it), plus either a white reflector or a black absorbing panel on the other side of the subject.

A cheeky chap!
With first the black background and then the white, even limiting ourselves to these few variables it was amazing just how different the results could be. It would be great to have another go, perhaps with some of the other lights too, as this is certainly a branch of photography to get better at. But for now though, I was quite pleased with the results!
